COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Georgia Congressman Sanford Bishop is making strides to make it easier for local military families to qualify for school meal programs.

Representative Bishop joined other lawmakers to introduce the Military Dependents School Meal Eligibility Act.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Georgia Congressman Sanford Bishop has announced that the FCC is awarding more than $4.5 million to local school districts through the Emergency Connectivity Fund.

County school districts in Bibb, Calhoun, Muscogee, Taylor, and Webster Counties are benefiting from the program.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A Georgia congressman was present when the chaos unfolded at the United States Capitol Wednesday and called the experience "frightening".

Anti-American, seditious, and unpatriotic are the three words Congressman Sanford Bishop, who represents Columbus, said describe what happened at the Capitol.

ALBANY — The downtown Albany post office has been given a new lease on life … a one-year lease, to be exact.

Mayor Dorothy Hubbard and Dougherty County Commission Chairman Jeff Sinyard held a joint news conference Wednesday morning to announce that the U.S. Postal Service had signed a one-year lease to maintain its branch at the 345 W. Broad Ave. facility through Sept. 30, 2014.

ALBANY — Albany and Columbus will receive more than $170,000 in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop announced this morning.

More than $99,000 in Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grants were awarded by the DOJ to Columbus for its Adult and Juvenile Drug Courts while more than $70,000 was awarded to the Albany Police Department for a new surveillance camera, tasers, computer equipment and other materials.

COLUMBUS, GA - Congressman Sanford Bishop calls it "the sword" once poised over a special congressional budget "super committee" charged with cutting $1.2 trillion in federal discretionary spending.

That sword was raised back in 2011 when the federal government was hitting its "debt limit" and needed drastic action. It appointed a super committee to find big cuts in spending.

CAMILLA, GA - Mitchell County Middle School held their annual Black History program Thursday morning. Their theme for this year's assembly was "A Tribute to Motown."

Students performed old Motown music and songs, paying tribute to greats like Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson.

Teachers wore full African attire all to celebrate Black History month as well.

Officials hope students pass along their rich history to the next generation.
