ALBANY — Calling it “a tonic or life support for our ailing economy,” U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop elaborated with members at the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Seminar Saturday on the effects that the $787 billion stimulus package will have on southwest Georgia.

This is the second time the Albany Democrat had been asked to speak about the stimulus, who had previously been quizzed about the issue at a meeting.

U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop was the guest of honor as Bainbridge College hosted a musical and oratory convocation to mark February as Black History Month.

The event was held at the Charles H. Kirbo Regional Center at Bainbridge College and included tributes to the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and the late jazz musician Louis Armstrong, both black men who helped shape American history.

U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.) said Thursday morning that the $787 million economic stimulus plan was written to ensure Republicans in the states did not hijack or block the money from serving its intended targets.

Speaking to a legislative breakfast of Voices for Georgia’s Children, Sanford — who serves on the House Appropriations Committee — said the more than $10 billion in K-12 money for Title 1 schools is a good example.

U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop, D-Ga., was in Atlanta Wednesday addressing the Georgia General Assembly. The statehouse and governor’s office is controlled by Republicans, but Bishop, because of his close connection to the Obama Administration, was a welcome visitor. On Tuesday, the president signed the federal $787 billion stimulus package.

“We want to create jobs,” Bishop said in a brief speech to the Georgia House. “Hopefully, this package will create 3.5 million jobs for taxpayers.”
