The 22nd annual Climax Flag Day Celebration on June 12 began with a parade down Broad Street ending at Parker Park.

The celebration continued with Climax Mayor Charles Hadsock giving a welcome and recognizing the dignitaries.

Mayor Hadsock said the flag was the sacred symbol of the heart and soul of America, representing freedom and everything America stood for, representing all 50 states and the blood of the men and women that gave their lives in service for the country.

U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop officially presented on June 1 the 404 permit issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that gives the Grady County Commission the authority to construct a 960-acre fishing lake on Tired Creek.

Rep. Sanford Bishop of Albany, who along with fellow Democratic Rep. Jim Marshall of Macon is spearheading efforts to derail a proposed Department of Transportation ban on peanuts on airplanes, wrote a stinging letter to DOT Secretary Ray LaHood calling the proposal "nuts."

NeighborWorks Columbus, along with community volunteers, will be working this week on 14 properties in East Wynnton Park on the second block of Baldwin Street.

"We are not building new houses here," said Michael Eddings, the chairman of NeighborWorks Columbus. "We are touching up some we've already built. We want to make sure they stay vibrant."

The workers will be painting, making minor repairs, cleaning yards and planting flowers.

The activities are part of National NeighborWorks Week.

ALBANY, GA — The next time you are aboard a commercial aircraft and are handed a complimentary pack of peanuts, enjoy chomping on them; It might be the last pack you eat on a flight.

The United States Department of Transportation last week proposed new wide-ranging consumer protections for air travelers.

Maj. Gen. Jerry White was presented the Civilian Marksmanship Program's Patriot Award during a ceremony held this morning at 10 a.m. at the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center.

U.S. Congressman Sanford D. Bishop gave the award to White, who is the president of the National Infantry Foundation and former commander general of Fort Benning.

White’s experience includes more than 30 years in the U.S. Army and more than 15 years as a leader in the U.S. military community.

Four members of President Barack Obama's Cabinet, as well as a record-setting 43 congressional teams will participate in the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure on Saturday, June 5, on the National Mall.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke will all participate in the 5k run/walk, as will teams from the following House offices, according to a press release sent out by the group:

CAIRO, GA — It was a “big deal.”

These are the words Grady County Board of Commissioners Chairman Al Ball used to describe receipt of a “404 Permit” from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for Tired Creek Lake.

“This is a big, big deal,” he said to a crowd of approximately 200 people that gathered for the permit presentation in front of the Grady County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon.

Ball said the recreational lake has been a county dream for approximately 80 years.
