When a service member joins the military, it’s not just a job; it’s a family commitment to our country. And yet, we, as a nation, tend to focus almost exclusively on the service members who put themselves in harm’s way, while often forgetting about the family members they leave behind who also make tremendous sacrifices on our behalf. These family members are affected in countless ways, and we have an obligation to do right by them.
COLUMBUS, Ga. --U.S. Representative Sanford Bishop Jr. of District 2 in Georgia and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) sponsored a forum at Columbus Technical College on Friday.
Bishop says, “This forum is designed to make sure that people in our area have the information, the technical assistance and the resources to make that small business engine work…work for us and put Americans back to work."
Small businesses make up 99% of all employers.
43% of the nation’s payroll comes from companies with less than 500 employees.
AMERICUS, GA - A new hospital is open replacing the one ravaged by the March 1, 2007 tornado that hit Americus.
It's a 76 bed 183,000 square foot facility.
A ribbon cutting is set for Saturday at 11:00am.
Phoebe Sumter Medical Center is hosting a Ribbon Cutting and Open House for its new 76 bed, 183,000 square foot state of the art facility.
This new hospital will come almost five years after a F3 tornado destroyed the community hospital on March 1, 2007.
U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop Jr., D-Albany, will co-host a small business forum Friday at Columbus Technical College .
Bishop will join Small Business Administration regional administrator Cassius Butts and Georgia District Director Terri Denison for the 10 a.m. event at 928 Manchester Expressway in Columbus. The event is open to the public and small business owners to focus on improving businesses, financing and getting access to government contracts.
WASHINGTON -- Middle Georgia post offices could feel the pinch when the financially beleaguered U.S. Postal Service trims an estimated $3 billion in expenses.
The potential cuts include slower delivery times for first-class mail, possible post office closures near Macon and Columbus, the potential of a shuttered distribution center in Columbus and the elimination of roughly 28,000 jobs nationwide.
On Thursday, Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Sanford Bishop (D-GA), co-chairs of the Congressional Military Family Caucus hosted a Military Family Summit.

Sitting in a leather chair in the book-lined library of his elegant Sears Woods home last week, the Rev. J.H. Flakes Jr. conceded that he’s come a long way from his impoverished childhood in the 1930s in Pumpkin Bottom, one of the poorest areas of Phenix City.
The road wasn’t always smooth for Flakes, who celebrates 50 years as pastor of the venerable Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church today. A high school dropout who turned to gambling and alcohol to numb the pain of poverty, he would ultimately set aside those vices as a young man and turn to the pulpit.
An organization that helps the needy in Columbus is on the receiving end today.
Congressman Sanford Bishop along with members of the Annual Columbus Black History Observance Committee presented Elder Bobby Harris and The House of Mercy with a $20,000 check today.
The money mainly comes from community donations. Congressman Bishop says, "I salute them for the work they've done over the years, and I’m just happy that the community has opened up its heart to the house of mercy, and assisting in the way we are able to do each year.”
ALBANY, GA -- The longest serving president of Albany Technical College now has one more accomplishment to be proud of.
The new library at Albany Tech's Logistics Education Center was dedicated to President Dr. Anthony Parker, who is the fifth president of the college.
The Honorable Congressman Sanford Bishop presented Parker with a congressional record.
Parker was also presented with a flag that was flown over the capital in his name.
Albany Technical College dedicated its new library and media center today in honor of the school's longest serving, and current President.
Dr. Parker is Albany Tech's 5th President. During his 16-years in the role, the school reached record enrollment and graduation numbers. He helped expand educational opportunities by adding programs, including workforce development and training. Since his mother was a librarian, he says it's fitting the school's Library and Media Center was named in his honor.
