Hospital Destroyed by Tornado Rises Again

December 9, 2011

AMERICUS, GA - A new hospital is open replacing the one ravaged by the March 1, 2007 tornado that hit Americus.

It's a 76 bed 183,000 square foot facility.

A ribbon cutting is set for Saturday at 11:00am.

Phoebe Sumter Medical Center is hosting a Ribbon Cutting and Open House for its new 76 bed, 183,000 square foot state of the art facility.

This new hospital will come almost five years after a F3 tornado destroyed the community hospital on March 1, 2007.

During the time of the event, then President George W. Bush visited the disaster site and called it "total devastation". The hospital has been on the road to recovery since that time.

Phoebe Sumter Medical Center CEO Keith Petersen will be on hand, and Congressman Sanford Bishop (2nd District, Georgia) is also expected to attend as well as State Senator George Hooks and Representative Mike Cheokas.

People from around the state and the community of Americus & Sumter County are expected to witness this recovery as well.

The new Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, located at the corner of Hwy 19 and 280 in Americus, Georgia. The address is 126 Hwy 280 W, Americus, GA 31719

The Ribbon Cutting and Open House is the final act on the road to recovery from the destruction of March 1, 2007.

It will also give people a chance to tour the new hospital and see all of the state of the art equipment and technology.

The new Phoebe Sumter Medical Center will be 183,000 square feet, four stories and feature all private rooms as well as all of the latest, state-of-the-art equipment. One of its many unique qualities will include a 26,000 square foot roof garden.

The green roof is the largest to be constructed for a healthcare facility in the Southeastern U.S. According to CEO Keith Petersen, it will be "the finest small hospital in America"
