On Thursday, September 8th, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that 150 of Georgia's 159 counties will be able to apply for federal assistance in regard to crop production losses in the form of emergency loans.

COLUMBUS, GA - This weekend, Congressman Westmoreland, joined by Senator Johnny Isakson, Senator Saxby Chambliss, and Congressman Sanford Bishop, will host a Service Academy Day in Columbus. The event will be held on Saturday, September 10th at the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The event will give students interested in attending one of the nation’s service academies a chance to meet with representatives from four of the nation’s five service academies.

Congressman Sanford Bishop along with other Georgia congressional delegates including Congressman John Lewis, Senator Saxby Chambliss, Congressman Austin Scott and more wrote a letter urging U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to grant secretarial disaster designations for dozens of Georgia counties that have been hurt by the state's ongoing drought.

If granted the secretarial disaster designation the counties would be eligible to apply for emergency loans and other benefits provided under the existing Farm Bill.

A week after a Fort Benning official reduced the projected impact from the Base Realignment and Closure process and acknowledged a 15 percent cut in its workforce on post, U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop Jr. said all post commanders have been directed to study their operations to reduce costs.

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - 33,000 school aged children headed back to the classroom Monday for the first day of school in Muscogee County and as some very special guests joined them at school this morning.

As if the first day of school isn't exciting enough, imagine walking in to see the mayor or your local congressman greeting you at the door.

"I had to be here to see all the hustle and bustle, the new people coming in. It's a very exciting day!" said Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson.

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Rep. Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-2), fought to protect the benefits of U.S. Veterans by offering a Motion to Recommit amendment to H.R. 2560, the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act of 2011.

Rep. Bishop’s motion stated that, “It shall not be in order in the House of Representatives or the Senate to consider any balanced budget amendment to the Constitution that could result in a reduction in veteran’s benefits.”

The motion, which received bi-partisan support, was unsuccessful by a vote of 188 to 236.

After the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in January, Members began looking into ways to secure their district offices. Now, some Democrats are questioning whether House leaders will give them enough money to do so.

Members’ Representational Allowances and the House Sergeant-at-Arms office face budget cuts, while House appropriators have proposed flat funding for the Capitol Police.
