Veterans

Congressman Bishop knows that our men and women serving in America’s military put their lives on the line to protect and defend this country. They and their families have made great sacrifices in order to fulfill this mission. The Congressman strives to ensure that when they put down the uniform, our veterans and their families should know that this country will honor their service and sacrifice by caring for them the way they cared for us.

The military veteran community is an important part of Georgia. Middle and Southwest Georgia are home to several military installations with vibrant veteran communities that surround them. Congressman Bishop works hard to make sure that military veterans and their families receive quality and timely service as well as the support they have earned.

He is the Vice Chair of the of the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies. He is a leader in making sure that veteran healthcare and VA facilities are robustly funded and that they are properly attending to veteran needs.

Congressman Bishop introduced the Hiring Heroes Act which became law in 2011 and ensures veterans have the resources and tools they need to find suitable and sustainable employment. He has led Congressional efforts to improve health care for veterans, especially those with traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, mental health issues, and lost limbs. He will continue to fight for legislation on behalf of veterans to increase educational opportunities, expand small business opportunities, provide cost-of-living adjustments, and reduce homelessness and suicide.

He is the co-chair of the Congressional Military Family Caucus which focuses on the well-being of the military family and servicemembers, including transition services and programs to help ensure veterans can best start their post-military lives.
