WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement after tornadoes touched down in four states, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 people and causing a swath of destruction in its wake.

"My prayers are with those who lost their lives and who have been severely impacted from yesterday's tornadoes. I am grateful to the first responders who have been working tirelessly to find the missing, clearing debris, and are caring for the injured," said Bishop.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives approved H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 by a vote of 228 to 198. This bill extends the review period from three days to ten in order to fix what is now known as the "Charleston loophole." Under current law, if the FBI fails to complete a background check in three business days, the individual is automatically cleared to purchase a gun.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives approved H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 by a vote of 240 to 190.

"I support the Constitution of the United States in its entirety, including the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms. That right, however, is appropriately subject to reasonable measures including reasonable background checks to limit access by those whose mental health or criminal history demonstrates a lack of requisite responsibility.

WASHINGTON, D.C.Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) and Congressman Austin Scott (GA-08) released the following statement on the United States House of Representatives' passage of bipartisan legislation to expand the current Ocmulgee National Monument from 702 acres to 2,800 acres. The measure also will change the name from "Ocmulgee National Monument" to "Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park" to increase name recognition, and authorize a resources study to include recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, and camping.
