COLUMBUS, GA – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement regarding the investigation of the shooting of Georgia citizen, Ahmaud Arbery:

"I am pleased the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation into the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery. While we cannot bring him back, I hope his family will be one step closer to justice for Ahmaud. I am keeping them in my prayers as they cope with this unspeakable tragedy."

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives approved H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 by a vote of 228 to 198. This bill extends the review period from three days to ten in order to fix what is now known as the "Charleston loophole." Under current law, if the FBI fails to complete a background check in three business days, the individual is automatically cleared to purchase a gun.

“My deepest condolences go out to the family of the Peach County deputy, Patrick Sondon, who lost his life Sunday while serving his community. Deputy Sondon was shot and killed while responding to a dispute between neighbors. A second Peach County deputy was wounded in the same incident and remains in critical condition.
