Congressman Bishop is a gun owner and believes that most gun owners are law abiding citizens who possess guns for hunting, recreation, and self-defense. Many citizens also collect guns as a hobby.
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, which Congressman Bishop strongly supports, is appropriately subject to reasonable, commonsense measures, including background checks to limit access by those whose mental health or criminal history demonstrates a lack of requisite responsibility.
Congressman Bishop has supported legislation to enhance background checks for those under the age of 21; establish criminal penalties for straw purchases and gun trafficking; preventing gun ownership for those convicted of domestic violence; strengthening safe storage requirements; and outlawing high-capacity magazines.
