WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Thursday, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop Jr. submitted the following statement on the death of U.S. Army Specialist Shannon Chihuahua into the Congressional Record:

“Madame Speaker, I rise today to pay tribute to a brave soldier, a dedicated citizen of Thomasville, Georgia, and a great American, U.S. Army Specialist Shannon “Chanen” Chihuahua, who selflessly gave his life while serving his country in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

In an effort to improve health care services in south Columbus, U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop presented a $6.2 million check Thursday to Valley Healthcare Systems Inc.

Bishop said Valley Healthcare has provided services to residents in Columbus for more than two decades.

“Whether rich or poor, black or white, urban or rural, the Valley Healthcare staff has worked to improve the lives of those in this community, serving as the linchpin in the health care of the community,” Bishop said.

ALBANY, GA – Thirteen million dollars in stimulus money is being routed through the U.S. Agriculture Department to bring broadband service to five south Georgia counties.

The service is expected to save and create jobs in Baker, Calhoun, Early Mitchell, and Miller Counties. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stood alongside Congressman Sanford Bishop for today's announcement at the South Georgia Regional Information Technology Authority.

Congressman Sanford Bishop brought Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to tour First United Ethanol and talk about their plan to expand Southwest Georgia’s renewable energy efforts to a national level.

Columbus State University will use a $1.6 million federal grant to establish a Games, Education, Modeling and Simulation Institute as a model project in support of tactical defense efforts at Fort Benning and elsewhere in the region.

The main goal of the project is to save the lives of soldiers.

“We’ll be working on a software system for training junior officers at Fort Benning,” said Wayne Summers, chair of the TSYS School of Computer Science at CSU. “We want to help the officers make better tactical decisions.

ALBANY, GA – Congressman Sanford Bishop made a stop at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital to discuss health care and recognize Phoebe's CEO Joel Wernick.

On September 29th Congressman Bishop read into the Congressional Record in Washington D.C. the accomplishments Joel Wernick has made in his 20 year history at the hospital. Wednesday he presented the plaque to Wernick who was also recognized by Georgia Trend as a top 25 leader for what he's done to expand Phoebe's reach in southwest Georgia.
