ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Albany State University was given almost $3 million in grant funding to expand broadband internet service.
The university was given a $2,997,777 Connecting Minority Communities Program grant.
Congressman Sanford Bishop said broadband access is crucial to everyday life.

Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) applauded a $2,997,777 Connecting Minority Communities Program grant to Albany State University (ASU) Wednesday.
The U.S. Department of Commerce program is overseen by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and focuses on providing and expanding broadband internet service and equipment for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribal Colleges and Universities, and Minority-Serving Institutions. The funds can also be used to hire and train IT personnel.

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) -- The United States Department of Agriculture's Secretary of Rural Development, Xochitl Torres Small, along with State Representative Sanford Bishop have announced a $36.4M high-speed infrastructure investment in the Midstate that will connect over 21,000 people to Public Service high-speed internet in rural areas across Central Georgia.
The infrastructure will also connect 569 businesses, 323 farms, and 29 educational facilities in Bibb, Crawford, Macon, Marion, Monroe, Talbot, and Taylor counties.

Pippin Orchards, in Dougherty County, was awarded a $250,000 Value-Added Producer Grant.
The grant was awarded by Secretary of Rural Development Xochitl Torres Small and Congressman Sanford D. Bishop.
The Pippin family is grateful for the grant and is excited for the future of their farm.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will be announcing two more family-owned farms in Georgia for the Value-Added Producer Grant.

Congressman Sanford Bishop took time off the campaign trail Thursday to stop by Pelham City Hall to place the ceremonial first E911 call on the city's new radio system, which was purchased with federal funds Bishop helped obtain for Pelham.
According to Pelham city manager Christian Drake, the need to upgrade the city's public safety radio system has been an issue for approximately five years.

(WRBL) – U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge visited NeighborWorks Columbus on Thursday to make a few announcements during her affordable housing-focused road tour. Congressman Sanford Bishop, who represents Georgia's second congressional district, came to introduce her.
After that meeting, Fudge, Bishop, NeighborWorks Columbus Executive Director Cathy Williams and others went to The Columbus Convention and Trade Center for a roundtable discussion about affordable housing.
