VALDOSTA, GA - A new center that serves children with disabilities and their families opened Thursday in Valdosta.

The home gives caregivers a break by temporarily caring for the children.

Congressman Sanford Bishop cut the ribbon on Megan's House on Williams Street.

This is the third Megan's house after ones in Albany and Waycross.

They're named after Megan Holloman who died at age 14 from a rare chromosome disorder.

A congressman from southwest Georgia and the state agriculture commissioner joined forces Wednesday to warn about “devastating effects” that cutting $5 billion in federal agriculture spending could have in Georgia.

The proposed cuts are part of a Republican budget proposal that the U.S. House passed Saturday.

“It’s necessary to cut the budget, but we want to keep the things that work well and are essential to Georgia agriculture,” said U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop of Albany.

ALBANY, GA — The Georgia Department of Transportation has completed its environmental assessment for a planned multimodal transit station in downtown Albany and has set a hearing for March 17 for public comment.

Congressman Sanford Bishop and Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black are meeting to discuss federal spending for agriculture, the state's single-largest economic sector.

The two leaders are planning a news conference Wednesday after a meeting where they will discuss upcoming legislation setting federal agriculture subsidies.

Bishop, a Democrat, sits on an agriculture-focused subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee. Black, a Republican, won office in November.

ATLANTA (AP) - Congressman Sanford Bishop and Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black say the federal government must maintain a financial safety net for farmers as Congress weighs spending cuts.

While they cautioned against hasty spending cuts, they did not say where the federal government could trim its spending on agriculture.
