U.S. Representative Sanford Bishop will announce the winner of the annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students in Georgia's Second District on Friday (5/9) at a 10:00 a.m. ceremony at the Second District Office in Albany, located at Albany Towers, Suite 114, 235 Roosevelt Avenue.

This is the human interest value: the winning entry will be flown to Washington, D.C. where, along with the winning entries from other Congressional Districts around the country, it will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year-seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Eric Jackson, a ninth grade student at Albany High School, is the winner of the 2003 Congressional Art Competition in Georgia's Second District, U.S. Representative Sanford Bishop announced Friday (5/9). The winning entry, a still life depiction of a fish market, will be displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol, along with the winning entries from other Congressional districts around the country.

U.S. Representative Sanford Bishop expressed support for a "fair, fiscally responsible and fast-acting" tax relief plan to lift the economy while voting against a majority-backed plan that was passed in the House Friday, which he described as "unfair, fiscally irresponsible and slow-acting at best."

With the May 30 deadline fast approaching, U.S. Representative Sanford Bishop is urging residents of eight southwest Georgia counties who suffered property losses as a result of the recent tornadoes to apply for federal Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loans as soon as possible.

U.S. Representative Sanford Bishop is inviting everyone to attend the ribbon cutting and open house for the new Second Congressional District Office in Columbus Monday (4/21), located at Suite 201, Heritage Towers, 18 Ninth Street.

The event is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

The Second District covers all or parts of 27 southwest Georgia counties, including an area of Columbus-Muscogee County, which was added to the district in the new reapportionment plan that went into effect this year with the start of the 108th Congress.

U.S. Representative Sanford Bishop has voted to add $77.9 billion more to this fiscal year's budget to fight the war in Iraq, provide humanitarian aid to the Iraqi people, strengthen homeland defense against terrorism, and help financially troubled U.S. airlines cover increased security costs.

The House and Senate Thursday (4/3) passed their own versions of the bill, entitled the "Emergency Wartime Supplemental Appropriations Act," and Congress was expected to reach final agreement the following week.

While supporting an alternative proposal which he says would better protect health care providers and patients alike, U.S. Representative Sanford Bishop Thursday (3/13) voted against a bill to impose a "restrictive" $250,000 cap on medical malpractice cases because "it supercedes the laws of all 50 states and will not solve the problem of high insurance costs."

The measure, passed by the U.S. House of Representatives 229-196, now goes to the Senate.
