COLUMBUS, Ga. – Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), a senior member of the United States House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement regarding the ongoing effort to fund the federal government:

“I remain committed to working with my colleagues, on both sides of the aisle, to get the government open and working for the people. Unfortunately, since January 20, we have witnessed a relentless effort to dismantle the federal government and eliminate its ability to serve the American people.

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) voted against a bill that would take back $9.4 billion in funds that were already Congressionally approved and signed into law. These funds were approved by Congress and signed into law earlier this year. H.R. 4 was previously considered by the U.S. House but was since modified by the U.S. Senate to restore $400 million in funds for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, A George W. Bush-era program which has helped prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths a year.

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), a senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, voted against H.R. 4106, the bill to fund the U.S. Department of Defense for Fiscal Year 2026.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) voted against H.R. 1, a budget reconciliation bill authored by United States House and Senate Republicans that will gut billions of dollars from healthcare, food, and other programs as well as add trillions of dollars to the federal budget deficit to pay for tax breaks that overwhelmingly benefit billionaires.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) opposed H.R. 1, a budget reconciliation bill that would gut crucial basic needs programs upon which millions of Americans rely and increase red tape. These cuts are being used to fund trillions of dollars in tax giveaways that overwhelmingly benefit billionaires and still explodes the deficit by $3.8 trillion.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), voted against H. Con. Res. 14, a partisan budget resolution that would result in cuts to Medicaid, student loans, and nutrition assistance for American families to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. At the same time, implementation of the budget resolution will add trillions of dollars to the national debt which even extremist, Republican critics of the legislation have pointed out.
