CONGRESMAN BISHOP CONGRATULATES MIDDLE & SOUTHWEST GEORGIA STUDENTS AWARDED U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIPS

WASHINGTON – Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) congratulated 15 college and university students from throughout Georgia’s Second Congressional District who were recently awarded prestigious federal scholarships for international studies. The students were awarded either the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship or the John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families by the office of the U.S. Department of State.

“I would like to congratulate these accomplished and deserving students. Through these scholarships, they will experience diverse communities and cultures, form new relationships, and gain a broader perspective that will enhance their education,” said Congressman Bishop. “They will also serve as our cultural ambassadors of our country, sharing our ideals, values, and interests. Programs like this are vital to both the quality of our education and our country’s leadership in the world.”

Second Congressional District awardees hail from Albany, Columbus, Cusseta, Fort Valley, Macon, Thomasville, and Warner Robins.

  • Lauren Beamon of Wesleyan College will study in Ireland
  • Adam Cobis-Ribeiro of Columbus State University will study in Japan
  • Ethan Dillinger of Columbus State University will study in South Korea
  • Tyc’Lyn Gilbert of the University of West Georgia will study in Morocco
  • Unya Hall of Albany State University will study in France and the Netherlands
  • Elaysha Henley of Valdosta State University will study in the United Kingdom
  • Nyiah Kelley of Mercer University will study virtually in Morocco
  • Charmaneise Laster of Albany State University will study in France
  • Kimberly Lopez of Mercer University will study in Spain
  • Zunaira Naeem of Albany State University will study in the United Kingdom, France, and Italy
  • Chardai Paytee of Valdosta State University will study in Spain
  • Stephanie Pierson of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will study in Spain
  • Kejuan Stewart of Albany State University will study in Cambodia
  • Darius Thompson of Albany State University will study in Cambodia
  • Jaiden Williams of Fort Valley State University will study in France

The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Developed under the framework of the State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid.
