CONGRESSMAN BISHOP SUPPORTS CREATION OF COMMITTEE TO EXAMINE US-CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY COMPETITION
January 10, 2023
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) supported H.Res. 11, a resolution that creates a Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party in the U.S. House of Representatives. Select committees focus on a specific topic that is beyond the authority or capacity of a standing committee.
"China has the second largest economy in the world and the ruling Communist Party, no doubt, seeks to export its authoritarian model around the globe," said Congressman Bishop. "It is vital that Congress continues to address the military, economic, and political threats that China's ruling party and its policies pose to America's interests."
Congressman Bishop added, "This Select Committee is an opportunity to complement the good work done by the bipartisan Congressional Executive Commission on China over the past four years and in the 117th Congress."
From 2021-2022, Congress approved several bipartisan bills and resolutions to address its concerns with China's ruling party. These measures include the Uyghur Force Labor Prevention Act, the Tibet Policy and Support Act, and the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act.
In August 2022, the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act was signed into law last year. This law will make the United States a world-leading manufacturer of semiconductors by supporting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education — from elementary school through higher education — as well as encourage the development of domestic manufacturing facilities and workforce opportunities. It will tap America's vast technological potential, reduce our reliance on foreign computer chip production, and increase national security.
