ALBANY, GA – On Friday, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) presented a ceremonial check to the Boys and Girls Club of Albany, Inc. representing $1,850,000 in federal funding that the Congressman secured for them as part of the Fiscal Year 2023 funding bill. The funds will be used by the Boys and Girls Club to make improvements to its facilities in Albany, Montezuma, and Plains. The presentation took place at the Boys and Girls Club Jefferson Street Unit.
"Making sure our youth have a safe place to go when not in school is important for their safety and the wellbeing of our communities. The Boys and Girls club provides a nurturing environment for them to learn, play, and grow with friends and among mentors and volunteers," said Congressman Bishop. "I was proud to help secure these funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Albany, Inc. which they will use to improve their facilities so that they can continue to serve nearly 25,000 youths in Dougherty, Macon, and Sumter counties."
"What does this support from Congressman Bishop mean – this investment into our future leaders will directly enhance program delivery in three of our service counties (Dougherty, Macon and Sumter) to ensure clean filtration systems and efficient lighting in our clubhouse's. This project will also support what's happening every day; providing healthy choices for immediate and long-term benefits of social and emotional health programs. Youth participating in a safe space that allows them to strengthen their study habits and gives them a nutritious meal before they go home for the evening," said Boys & Girls Club of Albany, Inc. CEO Tim Wofford. "We are on a mission to do whatever it takes to give our members world class experiences through community resources like this support. Our board members, staff and club members are so appreciative and grateful for the honorable work and thoughtfulness Congressman Bishop has presented the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany."
The Boys and Girls Club of Albany and surrounding towns hosts and organizes youth programs that provide social development, after school tutoring, and promotes healthy lifestyle choices.
Congressman Bishop is a senior member of the U.S. House of Representatives and leader on the House Appropriations Committee, which oversees federal discretionary spending. In addition to directing overall funding levels for federal departments, agencies, and programs – many of which operate or fund projects at the state and local level in Georgia and across the country – the Congressman was able to secure over $25 million in direct funding for several important projects in Middle and Southwest Georgia.
In the past two weeks, Congressman Bishop has presented funds to the cities of Colquitt (wastewater infrastructure improvements), Donalsonville (broadband internet expansion), and Bainbridge (industrial park development) as well as the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission in Camilla (first responder emergency communications equipment for 12 rural counties) and the Golden Triangle Resource Conservation and Development Council in Dawson (hi-tech simulators for workforce training program).
