CONGRESSMAN BISHOP OPPOSES EMERGENCY FUNDING BILL THAT FAILS TO ADDRESS FULL RANGE OF IMMEDIATE THREATS, HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

November 2, 2023

WASHINGTON – Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 6126, the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act:

“President Biden sent an emergency funding request to Congress that has the bipartisan support of Senate Democrats, Senate Republicans, and House Democrats. It would support Israel in its fight against Hamas, while providing humanitarian aid to Palestinian, Israeli, and international civilians impacted by the war; continue aid to Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s invasion; confront China’s adversarial activities in the Asia-Pacific region; and help secure America’s southern border.

“But, instead of responding to the request and providing all the resources to meet the needs of the moment, the House Republican majority put forth a bill that only provides military aid to Israel and conditions that aid on taking away funds from the Internal Revenue Service meant to stop billionaires and tax cheats who avoid paying their fair share of taxes. It is dead on arrival in the Senate and will face a veto.

“I support Israel’s efforts to defend its sovereignty against Hamas, but I could not support this callous political ploy by House Republicans to politicize America’s emergency support for Israel, deny support to Ukraine, and neglect the humanitarian crisis now existing in Gaza.”
