February 15, 2023
WARNER ROBINS, GA – Congressman Sanford D. Bishop Jr. (GA-02) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is awarding $8,803,316 to the Middle Georgia Community Action Agency for its Head Start program. The Head Start program supports early learning and development, health, and well-being for low-income families.
"The Head Start and Early Head Start Programs have provided millions of children with the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development skills that will help provide a strong foundation for the rest of their lives," said Congressman Bishop. "I am pleased to announce this award which will help hundreds of children and their families throughout Middle Georgia."
"Middle Georgia Community Action Agency, Inc. is pleased to hear about our recent award of a federal Head Start Grant," said Middle Georgia Community Action Agency Executive Director Robin Thomas. "Our Head Start program is committed to addressing the needs of disadvantaged families with an emphasis on the homeless, children in foster care, and children with disabilities. Studies have shown that children who participate in Head Start receive advantages that benefit them throughout their lifetime. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to continue our mission."
The Middle Georgia Community Action Agency, Inc. serves Bleckley, Crawford, Dodge, Houston, Jones, Laurens, Montgomery, Peach, Pulaski, Telfair, Treutlen, Twiggs, Wheeler, Wilcox and Wilkinson Counties. This award will fund the organization's high-quality education and support services to 867 three- to five-year old children and their families.
Congressman Bishop is a strong supporter of the Head Start Program. As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, he has worked to establish robust funding based on the current needs of the program each year. In the Fiscal Year 2023 the Administration of Children and Families, which includes Head Start and Early Head Start programs, received $34.4 billion in discretionary budget authority.
