MACON, GA – Congressman Sanford D. Bishop Jr. (GA-02) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is awarding $3,955,931 to the Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council to support its Head Start program. The Head Start program promotes early learning and development, health, and well-being for low-income families.
"The first few years of life are crucial to shaping a child's health and ability to learn in school. Head Start has been a dependable federal partner to local community organizations, providing much needed resources to support early childhood development and provide family support activities," said Congressman Bishop. "These funds are a valuable investment in our community's well-being today and they give our youth a better chance to reach their full potential in the years and decades ahead."
"I am honored to share our overwhelming excitement and deepest appreciation for the federal grant award," said Ms. Sarita R. Hill, Chief Executive Officer of the Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council. "This substantial funding will make a meaningful impact in the many lives of those we support through the invaluable services provided by Head Start and Early Head Start programs."
The Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council provide comprehensive, high-quality family and community services to eligible children living in Macon-Bibb and Monroe counties. Its Head Start programs care for and help educate infants as young as a few weeks old and children up through school age by offering creative, experiential learning environments that promote school readiness.
Congressman Bishop is a strong supporter of the Head Start Program. As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, he has worked to establish robust funding based on the current needs of the program each year. In the Fiscal Year 2023 the Administration of Children and Families, which includes Head Start and Early Head Start programs, received $34.4 billion in discretionary budget authority.
