February 16, 2023
COLUMBUS, GA –Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement regarding the death of Georgia civic leader Thomas W. Dortch, Jr.:
"Yesterday, Georgia lost a trailblazing leader, businessman, community activist, and my friend of longstanding, Mr. Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. I had the honor and privilege of working with Tommy during my time in the Georgia General Assembly and as a Member of Congress to ensure justice, equity, and a good quality of life for all Georgians and Americans.
"Tommy was a graduate of Fort Valley State University and would eventually go on to be the founder and Chairman of the Board of the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc. In 1978, Tommy began serving as an aide for U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, eventually rising to become the first African American State Director in U.S. history. He was also a pillar of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., where he improved the lives of so many through his mentorship of young African Americans.
"So many across America will feel this loss, but Tommy's immeasurable contributions to the state of Georgia and our nation will live on through the lives he has touched. My wife, Vivian, and I send our deepest condolences to Tommy's wife, Carole, and their family as they mourn the loss of this stalwart advocate and leader. Our thoughts and prayers will remain with them in the days, weeks, and months ahead."
