CONGRESSMAN BISHOP STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF LEGENDARY FOOTBALL COACH HAMPTON SMITH

ALBANY, Ga. – Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued this statement following the passing of legendary Albany State University football coach, Hampton Smith:

“Albany and Southwest Georgia lost a legend. Coach Hampton Smith was an icon at Albany State University where, in two stints over nearly three decades, he led the Golden Rams to several conference titles and an overall, extraordinary career winning record.

“He was more than just a coach. Hamp shaped the character of generations of young men and women at ASU and helped shape the character of his community through his political engagement in local, state, and national elections.

“My wife, Vivian, and I would like to extend our deepest condolences to Coach Smith’s family, friends, and all who mourn his loss. He will be missed, but his legacy will long be remembered by all those whose lives he touched.”
