CONGRESSMAN BISHOP STATEMENT ON PROPOSED, TWO-STEP APPROACH TO CONTINUING FUNDING FOR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
WASHINGTON – Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), a senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement in response to proposed legislation from U.S. House Republicans that would temporarily continue funding for the federal government through early 2024.
“Congress needs to come together and find a compromise that keeps the federal government open and working for the American people. This includes providing domestic disaster relief and protecting our borders as well as addressing the ongoing conflict resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the war between Hamas and Israel, and the adversarial moves by China in the Indo-Pacific region.
“Unfortunately, the Republican proposal to ‘ladder’ temporary, continued funding for the federal government does not appear to meet this mark. It also creates the possibility of rolling fiscal cliffs which could leave Americans at risk of a government shutdown from month to month. In the coming days, we must find a bipartisan path forward that allows Congress to address all these needs forthwith while we work to finish a full-year federal funding bill.”
