CONGRESSMAN BISHOP RECOGNIZES SPEAKER PELOSI, LEADER HOYER FOR YEARS OF CONGRESSIONAL LEADERSHIP

November 17, 2022
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement following announcements by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer that they would not be seeking leadership positions within the Democratic Caucus in the 118th Congress:
"During their time as leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer have presided over, guided, and supported the Democratic Caucus through tumultuous and momentous moments in America's history.
"They were steady hands at the wheel, steering the country through the 2008 financial crisis — one of the worst in recent history — by working across the aisle with our Republican colleagues and President George W. Bush.
"As part of the historic presidency of Barack Obama, they each helped shepherd the Affordable Care Act through Congress which made health care more accessible and affordable as well as improved the quality of life for millions of Americans.
"When the U.S. Capitol was violently attacked — threatening the Vice President, Senators, Representatives, police officers, journalists, and visitors — they courageously responded to protect their colleagues, regardless of political persuasion, and our democracy.
"Speaker Pelosi and Leader Hoyer have overseen some of the most productive Congresses in the past decades and supported a new generation of legislators that come from a broader cross-section of the diverse communities that enrich our country.
"More than colleagues, I have been blessed to call them dear friends. I am grateful for their tireless strength, immeasurable compassion, and passionate spirit of service."
