LEESBURG, GA– Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) presented a ceremonial check to the City of Leesburg representing the $949,146 in federal funding that the Congressman secured for the city as part of the Fiscal Year 2023 funding bill. The city will use the funds to install a pump station, clean water lines, and Ultraviolet Treatment System at its wastewater treatment plant. This clean water project will support the development of an events and recreation complex.
A community's water and wastewater infrastructure are the foundation for larger projects like industrial parks, event centers, business districts, and housing development. In Leesburg, this clean water project will help make it possible to support an events and recreation complex which, in turn, will bring new businesses and opportunities to Lee County residents and help build the westside of town.
"Clean water is fundamental to the overall wellbeing of a community – from its public health to its economic development. However, major improvement projects can be a huge strain on the budgets of towns and counties in Southwest Georgia," said Congressman Bishop. "Nonetheless, this is an important investment to make in Leesburg and these federal funds for the pump station, lines, and treatment system will have a downstream affect that will allow the city to welcome new businesses and events and help it grow. We all benefit from that return on our investment."
"We are so excited that our wastewater project has been approved. This project is needed in our small community to develop a Recreation and Agricultural Events Center on the 100-acre site located on the US19 Bypass," said Leesburg Mayor Billy Breeden. "This also will open up commercial and residential opportunities that can grow the west side of town. We appreciate the continued support the City of Leesburg receives from Representative Sanford Bishop."
Congressman Bishop is a senior member of the U.S. House of Representatives and leader on the House Appropriations Committee, which oversees federal discretionary spending. In addition to directing overall funding levels for federal departments, agencies, and programs – many of which operate or fund projects at the state and local level in Georgia and across the country – the Congressman was able to secure over $25 million in direct funding for several important projects in Middle and Southwest Georgia.
In the past three weeks, Congressman Bishop has presented funds to the cities of Colquitt, Donalsonville, and Bainbridge as well as the Golden Triangle Resource Conservation and Development Council in Dawson, the Boys and Girls Club of Albany, Inc., and the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission in Camilla.
Earlier this week, he presented funds to the Southwest Campus of the Medical College of Georgia in Albany (to help provide more physicians and medical professionals in rural and underserved areas). Today, he has also presented funds to the Southwest Georgia Children's Alliance, Inc. (for its child abuse treatment and prevention programs), Mount Olive Community Outreach Center, Inc. (to replace housing lost to Hurricane Michael and recent tornadoes), and Albany Technical College (to help recruit and train more nurses for the region).
