Congressman Bishop on the Passing of Coretta Scott King
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Sanford Bishop issued the following statement on the passing of Coretta Scott King:
"On behalf of the over six hundred thousand people of the Second Congressional District of Georgia, I extend our prayers and most heartfelt condolences to the family of Coretta Scott King.
"Often referenced as 'the first lady of the Civil Rights Movement,' Mrs. King was a trailblazer, enduring unspeakable racism, violence and ultimately the loss of her husband in pursuit of equality and justice for all. Her grace and dignity in the face of overwhelming adversity inspired millions worldwide and fought the tide of hatred, which she eloquently argued 'injures the hater more than it injures the hated.'
"It was my honor to have known Coretta Scott King. She was a woman of great class, faith and commitment to social justice around the world. While we mourn her passing, we celebrate her legacy that will forever live on in our continued struggle for equality and in our communities where children of every color are able to achieve the dream that her husband and she envisioned for America."
