CONGRESSMAN BISHOP MOURNS THE PASSING OF FORMER U.S. SUPREME COURT JUSTICE SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement regarding the death of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor:
“Today, America mourns the loss of former United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. She was the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. During her tenure on the Court, Justice O’Connor was a strong proponent of collegiality among the justices and preserving the public's trust in our nation’s highest court.
“Nominated by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, she served on the Supreme Court with distinction for over two decades before her retirement in 2006. O’Connor’s Supreme Court opinions were widely considered to be well-researched and balanced. She often served as the ‘swing vote’ for some of America’s most influential cases.
“Justice Sandra Day O’Connor blazed a historic path. She will continue to serve as a role model for future Supreme Court Justices as well as women pursuing careers and leading roles in the field of law.”
