ALBANY, GA– Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) visited the Mt. Olive Community Outreach Center, Inc. to announce the $5,000,000 in federal funding that the Congressman along with Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff secured as part of the Fiscal Year 2023 funding bill. The center will use the funds to help replenish housing in the Albany area that was lost to severe weather events, including Hurricane Michael and recent tornadoes that have affected the area.
"Housing is a basic need upon which an individual's and family's success and wellbeing depends. It is crucial to health, education, and work stability. When widespread disaster strikes – floods, hurricanes, tornadoes – families and communities are hard-pressed for resources to recover when there is so much simultaneous need," said Congressman Bishop. "I am glad to have worked with Senators Ossoff and Warnock to secure these federal funds which will help replenish housing Dougherty County lost to Hurricane Michael and recent tornadoes so that our community can thrive and grow."
"Recognizing the need for affordable housing for good, hard-working Americans is important, but working to eliminate the problem is paramount," said Mt. Olive Community Outreach, Inc. Executive Director Leslie Heard. "Thank you, Congressman Bishop and our Senators, for your hard work."
Congressman Bishop is a senior member of the U.S. House of Representatives and leader on the House Appropriations Committee, which oversees federal discretionary spending. In addition to directing overall funding levels for federal departments, agencies, and programs – many of which operate or fund projects at the state and local level in Georgia and across the country – the Congressman was able to secure over $25 million in direct funding for several important projects in Middle and Southwest Georgia.
In the past three weeks, Congressman Bishop has presented funds to the cities of Colquitt, Donalsonville, and Bainbridge as well as the Golden Triangle Resource Conservation and Development Council in Dawson (hi-tech simulators for workforce training program), the Boys and Girls Club of Albany, Inc. (for facilities improvements in Albany, Plains, and Montezuma), and the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission in Camilla (first responder emergency communications equipment for 12 rural counties).
Earlier this week, he presented funds to the Southwest Campus of the Medical College of Georgia in Albany (to help provide more physicians and medical professionals in rural and underserved areas). Today, he has also presented funds to the Southwest Georgia Children's Alliance, Inc. (for its child abuse treatment and prevention programs), the City of Leesburg (for a water pump installation clean water project), and Albany Technical College (to help recruit and train more nurses for the region).
