Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement concerning the passing of Dr. Lonnie King Jr.:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Lonnie King Jr. and I send my condolences to his family during this trying time. Dr. Lonnie King Jr. has left an enduring impression in Georgia and the nation. As a native of Arlington, Georgia, he went on to graduate from my alma mater Morehouse College, where he was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Chairman of the student movement in Atlanta that advocated for the rights of students to protest. His work as a civil rights leader helped spark sit-ins, and marches that ultimately desegregated Atlanta. We have lost one the civil right movement’s unsung heroes, a leader, a teacher and a man of upright character, but he will not be forgotten.”
