Bishop Statement On Gaibler Peanut Loan Rate Cut Proposal

June 1, 2008

Washington, D.C.- Congressman Sanford Bishop today released the following statement on the Gaibler Peanut Loan Rate Cut proposal:

“I do not understand why a proposal to reduce the loan rate of runner peanuts, which comprise eighty percent of U.S. production and are grown primarily in the Southeastern United States, was not debated during the Farm bill that Congress only recently passed. This plan would arbitrarily reduce the loan rate for peanut farmers and hurt growers across the Southeast.

“I plan to contact the Secretary of Agriculture on this issue and urge him to prevent the proposal from moving forward.”
