CONGRESSMAN BISHOP ANNOUNCES FEDERAL FUNDS FOR CHILD EDUCATION AND FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES IN MACON

December 20, 2023

MACON, Ga. – Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), announced that the Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council (EOC), Inc. will receive $4,278,717 through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Head Start grant program. The grant will go towards the Macon-Bibb EOC’s Head Start program, which promotes education, school readiness, and health and social services for low-income families.

“I am pleased to announce these funds that will support the continued work that the Macon-Bibb EOC is doing through the Head Start Programs for families in Middle Georgia. Making sure families have the resources they need for their children early in their lives helps improve their outlook and opportunities for the rest of their lives,” said Congressman Bishop. “This is an investment in Georgia’s future, helping our children meet their full potential and laying the foundation for a thriving community in the years ahead.”

“We are immensely grateful for the ongoing support of Congressman Bishop, whose profound dedication to our community means critical funding continues for Head Start and Early Head Start programs,” said Ms. Sarita Hill, Chief Executive Officer, Macon-Bibb Economic Opportunity Council. “These funds directly benefit our Head Start programs and extend resources to families to help ensure safe and nurturing environments for so many young learners. This grant is a testament to the Congressman’s unwavering advocacy for early childhood education, the importance of school readiness and the well-being of our children.”

The Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council works to provide community services to assist and uplift families in Macon-Bibb and Monroe counties. Through programs like Head Start, children receive pre-kindergarten education that promotes their well-being and school readiness.

Congressman Bishop continues to be a strong advocate of the Head Start Program and supporting vital federal childcare resources like it. As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, he has fought for robust funding for this program which serves 30 million families across the country. In the Fiscal Year 2023 the Administration of Children and Families, which includes Head Start and Early Head Start programs, received over $34.4 billion in discretionary budget authority.
