WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) warned of Republican budget consequences for Georgia and our nation after voting against the Republican Budget Conference Report.

“If our budget ultimately is a statement of our nation’s values and priorities, then I am deeply concerned that we could be mortgaging our future for the sake of misplaced priorities. While I strongly support the goal of putting our nation’s fiscal house in order, I do not believe that reducing the deficit should come at the expense of jobs, economic growth, and vital investments in health care, education, and our workforce.

“It makes little sense then to support a budget which would destroy millions of jobs, create dangerous gaps in service for our veterans, weaken national security, transform Medicare into a voucher program, decrease economic growth, pave the way for a tax plan that ends higher education tax credits, end the boost in the child tax credit, ignore our crumbling infrastructure, and surrender American leadership in education, research and innovation.

“Even more astounding is that this budget would repeal all of the benefits and patient protections in the health reform law, driving up the out-of-pocket cost of health coverage and reducing access to quality care. Truly, for millions of Georgians and Americans across the nation, the motto for this budget should be ‘all pain, no gain.’”
