Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement after the House approved H.R. 1585 the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019, 263 to 158. This bipartisan piece of legislation improves the landmark Violence Against Women Act of 1994 to address gaps in the current law based on insights from service providers, law enforcement, and other experts:

“This critical and bipartisan piece of legislation makes modest, but necessary enhancements to the existing law in order to continue to end the abuse and sexual violence against women. Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act maintains protections for all victims, makes vital investments in sexual assault prevention, protects victims of domestic violence from intimate partner homicide, and increases victims’ access to safe housing and economic stability. I was pleased to have voted for this important legislation and I encourage my Senate colleagues to do the same.”
