BISHOP STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS TO A JOINT SESSION OF CONGRESS

March 1, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement regarding President Trump's address to a Joint Session of Congress:

"During last night's address, the President spoke of unity. He spoke of protecting our national security. He spoke of rebuilding our infrastructure, creating new jobs, strengthening our health and child care systems, and encouraging women in entrepreneurship. These are laudable goals and vital issues that must be addressed.

"However, the administration's actions so far are not aligned with many of the promises we heard last night. The administration's plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act would leave hundreds of thousands of Georgians without health care. The administration's actions on immigration have stoked fear and chaos around the country and damaged local law enforcement's ability to build in-roads with many of the communities they serve. The administration's budget would slash funding for child care, food and nutrition, and education.

"Ultimately, rhetoric and action are two different things, and the devil is always in the details. I have not yet seen any detailed policy plans that will constructively address the vital issues discussed last night, nor have I seen a true willingness from the administration to transparently match its actions with its words of unity and bipartisanship."
